By FRANK GETTY. United Press Sperts Editor. NEW YORK. June 6. They say that the ovation accorded Mrs.

John Hertz's Reigh Count at Epsom Downs today was a noisier and more enthus-slastlc tribute that that which greeted the Irish colt, Trleo, winner of yesterday's Derby. In a sense, Reigh Count's was the greater leat, the Sun Reigh Colt, winner of our own Kentucky Derby last year, finally coming into his own, flashing a breath-taking finish to get up to win the Coronation cup at a mile and half over the Derby course by a short head from the well-backed favorite. By winning at Epsom Downs today, Reigh Count showed the stamp of true equine greatness, for the colt had to overcome handicaps of climate and unfamiliar racing conditions, handicaps which have proved too much for many great horses In the past. May Win Gold Cups. It may be that the Hertz colt, having found itself after three mediocre performances abroad, will go on to win the cherished Ascot gold cup, one of the most valued of English racing trophies.

there is a thrill for American turf enthusiasts in Reigh Count's achievement at Epsom Downs, especially when we consider huw such equine wonders as Papyrus and Epl-nard, champions of England and France respectively, failed in this country. The Coronation cup is not a classic fixture, but it is an important race, and the manner of the American colt's victory was what brought forth the thunderous, spontaneous tribute from the British sportsmen at Epsom. There were nine in the field which went to the post today, and while a few tipsters liked Reigh Count, the majority went for Will Darneirs Athford, a full brother of Trigo. the Derby winner. The odds against Mrs.

Hertz's horse were 10 to 1, not surprising in view of the fact that Reigh Count ran unplaced in his first three starts abroad. what nrnhfihiv niaved a "most im HocKtt CHAMP. fcEW tJfcNMtfJ OUT TFC WJM6 BtMHY CAe Bn-X AHT KhVWED CAARU OUT Joe GOVi6U tAHMD VOfN OC U.15 HEAP OK TUg- looter. -tviK. i AND CAf "To WlNi "IMS SftMC TUikJG MVP6MST To JW 5MTH HACKS DEFEAT BROWNS AGAIN IN 15-4 GAME Champs Holds Second Despite Licking; Tigers Defeat Washington, 7-5, as Sox Clout Boston, 9 to 5.

The start was good, but Childs, who knows that rolling Derby course, pulled up Reigh Count and had the horse under sharp restraint in last place as they broke up the long hill of the back stretch. Silver Stead and then Athford made the pace, with Childs riding Reigh Count clear of the field in the rear until Tattenham corner, that sharp, dangerous turn for home, was safely passed. Looked Like Winner. Athford looked every inch a winner as his brother had been the day before.

The Irish colt, which had been backed down to 9 to 4, took the lead at the head of the stretch where the broad green track starts to dip sharply down to the judges stand. Michael Barry on Athford already heard the congratulatory cheers or the crowd when Childs made his move. Shaking up Reigh Count and hand riding the colt in masterly fashion, Childs shot ahead with a "'Sigh Count, unused to the downhill slope, nearly stumbled once, but never slackened the winning drive. The colt bore over towards Plantago, but Childs had him in hand instantly, and then they were head to head withAthford in a stirring duel through the final furlong. and there Reigh Count showed his greatness, challenging SXsly and getting up the i we to shove his nose-the nose of the first American thoroughbred to win this race at Epsom in 19 years-First "SKffiflfSlO that Sir Martin went over and won the Coronation cup.
