But 21 fires were reported this season in the Deer Lodge National forest, ae cording to the annual report of the forest issued Tuesday by Supervisor Fay i. Clark. These fires, the report shows, damaged a total of 135 acres covered for the, most part by stumps or scrub timber; the loss was therefore only nominal but the cost of fighting the fires amounted to $649.52. Of the 21 fires reported, two were caused by nine by campers, nine by lightning, while one waa of unknown origin and four were Incendiary. Two of the Incendiary fires, one on the Roosevelt drive and one near Anaconda, the report shows, caused the greatest 'amount of damage, burning a combined area of about 25 acres.

Thirty seven of the acres damaged were on government forest land, according to the report, the remaining 98 being owned by private individuals. "Probably the most successful we have ever had," was Supervisor Clark's characterisation of the season just closed. "The record," he said, "seems remarkable when it is considered that on Sundays and holidays the forest district has a population of about 10,000 campers and picnicers. Some seasons we have had fewer fires but the proportionate Joss has never been smaller." To this condition Mr. Clark attributed tha spirit of co-operation shown by the public in general in putting out camp fires and reporting others when they discover them and to the excellent work dono by the forest service itself.

"The rangers themselves havo made splendid records In fighting fires and in some instances have been on the scene of blazes 10 miles distant within 25 minutes after they have been reported. declared.
