A number of blocks to the west of the Nantao region subjected to bombardment, Japanese troops engaged in a spectacular, indecisive battle across narrow. winding Zahwei creek before thousands of spectators in the French concession, including American observers. Chinese trench mortars answered the fire of Japanese guns hurling shells from 800 yards behind the lines.

The only apparent possibility of escape for the diehard Chinese units was to cross the Whangpoo or to enter the French concession, where they would be disarmed and interned. At dusk, a falling shell exploded an oil near the creek. The battle died down at nightfall, with indications it would be resumed at dawn. There were reports that the Japanese planned to use Soochow creek to transport military supplies despite the fact that it runs through American and British defense sectors. The Japanese spokesman said a column attacking Fengking, on the road south to Hangchow, Chekiang province seaport, met little resistance.
